Opera News, the 87-year-old publication operated by the Metropolitan Opera Guild, will cease publication in November, announced the Met on Tuesday. The annual Opera News Awards will also be discontinued.
Met Guild board members cited financial woes as the reason behind their decision. “It is no longer economically viable for us to continue in our current form,” said Winthrop Rutherford Jr. and Richard J. Miller Jr., the Guild's chairman and president, respectively, in a statement.

“It really is the result of several years of declining economic fortunes,” said Met general manager Peter Gelb. “What [the guild] are suffering is what many non-profits have been suffering, which is a situation where the earned revenues and donations are not enough to keep up with the expenses.”
A section of Opera News will be integrated into the London-based Opera magazine, using the current Opera News logo and being sent out to subscribers in the United States.

Bring up financial reasons is not convincing at all. Where there is will there is a way
Very unfortunate to hear that such a distinguished source of opera literature is no longer available, especially for us New Yorkers. Despite the financial woes noted, Alkis Karmpaliotis’ and his articles still give me hope for the sustaining future of opera here in New York and abroad.
This is just one unfortunate loss among many steps forward!
This is terrible news. I read Opera News from cover to cover every month and will feel lost without it. It truly enhances my experience of opera and, indeed, guides me in my choices of what to see and listen to.
It's hard to believe there are not enough opera fans and readers with enough $$$ to keep Opera News afloat--at least in an online format. This is a serious blow not only to the Met Opera Guild but also to the Metropolitan Opera itself.
Sad to see another operatic organization gone. As far as I can see the only truly trustworthy and reliable source for operatic media is appreciateopera.org
